Hey there folks, my name's John. I was born nearly 30 years ago and raised in the great state of Florida. I have now lived in North Carolina for the past five years and cannot foresee leaving the South for any long period of time. I am a huge music fan and you can read more about my interests in that on my music page.
I graduated with a B.S. in Social Science Education in 1993 from Florida State University (Go Noles!). I decided quite rapidly that I did not want to teach for a living and soon found myself living in the woods doing counseling work with adjudicated adolescent boys for three years. Having burned out on that, I went out and got myself a Master's of Social Work degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
I am really interested in doing planning and program evaluation in the human services; I am not so interested in direct practice or "traditional" social work per se. I believe that planning and evaluation is an area that really holds a lot of opportunities and needs to get up to speed in this field. Human services will soon require the same quality of service delivery that businesses require in order to remain vital. If you're interested in hiring me for a position like this, check out my resume and give me a call or email me.
The biggest news in my life is that
while attending the MSW program, I fell in love and found the woman
I married. Atop
Mount Craig (the second highest peak east of the Mississippi River),
I asked her to marry me on October 17, 1998, and she said "What?"
After some more begging and pleading and inspection of the ring, she
agreed. Her name is Ann-Marie, she's from Brooklyn (who woulda
thought I'd fall for a Yankee?), and we
got married this past
October in Black Mountain, North Carolina. However, I could not talk
her into letting the Derek Trucks Band play our wedding.
Other interests of mine include sports. I love to play ultimate frisbee and volleyball. I love to watch basketball but I am unable to play it with any skill. I am a huge football fan since I was very young but I was never gifted with the size to play beyond peewee football. Of course, my favorite teams include the Florida State Seminoles on the college level and the Miami Dolphins in the NFL. I believe Dan Marino's time is running out however . . .
I am a big fan of live music and have seen some 250 live shows by different bands. Topping the list would be 37 Grateful Dead shows, 32 Allman Brothers Band shows, and about a dozen shows apiece of Gov't Mule and the Derek Trucks Band. These are bands that really know how to play and enjoy doing it. I have a fair collection of live recordings and if you're interested in trading, check out my live tapes page.
As for those vital background stats,
I am the older son of two. My parents have been happily married
since 1966. (I could be on a 50's sitcom, eh?) My brother is the
father of a three year old boy so that makes me "Uncle Johnny". My
folks still live in Florida -- they love running the air conditioner
in February. I am still reeling from the fact that they have been
online for over a year now. (I mean we were the last ones on the
block to get a VCR!) I owe my folks a great deal for working hard to
insure my happiness and contributing to making me a semiproductive
member of society.
I love to talk music and sports so if after looking over my site, you see that we share common ground, feel free to drop me a line.
